Is eating one meal a day safe?

Have you ever had that eating only One Meal A Day is a popular yet highly debated form of intermittent fasting.

While some people praise it as a life-changing productivity hack, others warn that it is an unsustainable, restrictive diet culture trend.

I have got in the habit of eating only one meal a day and reading about intermittent fasting. I was inquisitive to learn the benefits for health or weight loss.

For this article I have relied on my own experience and research done on the subject matter.

▶️Where does this tendency to eat just one meal a day come from?

While modern society treats three meals a day as a baseline, this structure is a relatively recent by product of the Industrial Revolution.

The inclination to eat only once spans across several eras and influence, it stems from:

♦️A combination of ancient historical habits.

♦️Biological survival mechanisms.

♦️The modern wellness movement.

For example:

🟠The Roman Empire: Romans traditionally ate only one substantial meal a day, usually consumed around noon.

They believed that eating more than once a day was unnatural, unhealthily indulgent, and a form of gluttony. Breakfast was heavily frowned upon in their society

🟠In various historic cultures, such as some Australian Aboriginal communities, eating a single main meal aligned with the physics of cooking.

Because preparing large, underground earth ovens required massive effort, making a single, slow-cooked evening meal the most practical choice.

🟠 Biological survival mechanisms driving the tendency to eat just one meal a day are rooted in evolutionary adaptation and metabolic flexibility.

🟠The modern wellness movement views the human body as a machine that can be programmed for peak performance.

To have the ability to restrict food intake to a one-hour window is viewed as the ultimate display of mindfulness and willpower.

🟠Luxury Fasting: The concept is supported by expensive fasting-mimicking supplements, high-end electrolyte replacements, and elite wellness clinics that charge thousands to supervise fasts.

So, this tendency of eating one meal a day seems to have been embraced years back.

▶️What will happen if I only eat once a day and only drink water?

Eating only once a day and drinking only water is an extreme form of intermittent fasting known as the One Meal a Day diet.

Based on what we know the human body works, there are potential risks of eating one meal rather than 3 per day.

This may cause:

♈ Rapid weight loss.

♈A drop in your insulin levels.

♈Can trigger cellular clean up.

However, it can also introduce substantial health risks like

♦️Nutrient deficiencies can, in the long term, cause fatigue, a weakened immune system, muscle loss, and bone fragility.

♦️️ Dehydration causes feeling dizzy and reduced physical performance.

♦️Severe muscle loss.

♦️  Metabolic stress and anxiety due to the pressure of having to eat only once.

▶️What are the theoretical risks of eating just one meal a day?

Eating just one meal a day carries several theoretical risks rooted in metabolic disruption, nutritional gaps, and psychological strain.

While it is popular for weight management, compressing all daily nutrition into a single window can overtax or undersupply the body’s systems

♦️Muscle and Bone Wasting: Human trials indicate that even when consuming adequate calories, an extreme fasting window can trigger the loss of lean muscle mass and bone density.

♦️Blood Sugar Instability: Restricting food to one sitting cause poor blood sugar handling, resulting in higher morning fasting glucose and delayed insulin responses.

♦️Long fasting windows pose a severe risk of low blood sugar crashes, especially for individuals managing diabetes.

♦️Elevated Cholesterol: Clinical trials found that consuming a single daily meal can significantly increase total and “bad” cholesterol levels.

These nutritional risks and metabolic strain of extreme intermittent fasting can affect more people who have specific underlying medical conditions, metabolic profiles, or stage-of-life nutritional demands

▶️Are there any scientific studies on the subject, and what do they say?

The normal human eating patterns of a human being keeps the body in a constant state of digesting food for most of the day.

3 meals per 24 hours fashion: Eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day.

Snacking: Eating small amounts of food between those main meals.

Because of this frequent eating, the body spends 12 to 16 hours everyday digesting food. This leaves very few hours of the day (mostly while sleeping) where the body is completely done digesting and is in a fasted state.

The history of published research in eating patterns of humans’ dates to before the middle of the 20th century.

However, it does not focus on eating only one meal a day but on different types of intermittent fasting.

Research done by different people is limited and not of good quality.

Research that investigated the food intake in a three meal per 24-hour fashion within between meal snacking (Kant,2018)

Our body switches between storing energy when we eat and burning fat when we fast, driven entirely by the hormone insulin.

Continuous Digestion: Eating three meals and snacks keeps you in the “postprandial” (fed) state for 12 to 16 hours a day.

No Breaks: Your body rarely gets a break from processing incoming food.

What Happens When You Eat (Fat Storage Mode)

Insulin Rises: Food intake triggers a spike in the hormone insulin.

Energy Burned: Higher insulin forces your muscles and tissues to absorb and burn glucose (sugar) for immediate energy.

Fat Stored: Insulin activates an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase. This enzyme locks away fat from your food directly into your fat cells.

Insulin Drops: When you stop eating (like overnight), insulin levels finally drop.

Lipolysis Starts: Low insulin triggers lipolysis, meaning your body starts breaking down stored fat.

The Switch: Your body shifts from burning glucose to burning its own stored fat for fuel (Lafontan 2009).

What Happens During Extended Fasting (Adaptation)

Physiological Insulin Resistance: If you fast for a long time, your body temporarily rejects glucose uptake in muscles.

Brain Protection: This is a safe, natural survival mechanism. It saves whatever glucose is left in your blood for your brain, which relies heavily on sugar, while the rest of your body runs on fat (Lafontan 2009).

▶️What do we learn from this study about eating one meal a day

Based on the biological mechanisms explained in that research, eating One Meal a Day completely flips how your body manages energy by minimizing time spent in the fed state and maximizing time spent in the fat-burning state

Here is exactly what we learn about the effects of eating one meal a day.

⚫Standard eating leaves you with only a few hours of low insulin (mostly overnight) to burn fat.

⚫ By eating only once, you dramatically shrink the “postprandial state” from 12–16 hours down to just a few hours. This gives your body a massive 20+ hour window of low insulin, allowing continuous lipolysis (fat-burning).

⚫The body must empty its glucose focus before it can switch to burning fat.

⚫Because you go so long without food, your body successfully completes the “shift from glucose to fat oxidation.” You become highly efficient at burning your own body fat for daily fuel.

 ▶️Is it better to eat your only meal in the morning, at noon or in the evening?

There is already little data to say whether eating only once a day is a safe practice. And even less to determine the best time.

Meal timing is an emerging field of research that investigates the influence of eating patterns on our circadian rhythm, metabolism, and overall health.

So, aligning your meals with daylight hours improves metabolism, while eating late disrupts your body’s natural clock and increases disease risk

♦️The Brain’s Clock: Your main internal clock responds primarily to light and darkness.

♦️The Body’s Clocks: Your organs (liver, pancreas) have “peripheral” clocks triggered by food.

So, the Conflict of eating at the wrong time (e.g., late at night) desynchronises these clocks, confusing your metabolism

♦️Cortisol: Spikes in the morning to wake you up, boost appetite, and mobilise energy. Eating early aligns perfectly with this peak.

♦️Melatonin: Rises at night to prepare you for sleep. Eating when melatonin is high impairs your body’s ability to handle sugar (glucose tolerance).

♦️ Eat Early: Focus your food intake during daylight hours (early breakfast, early dinner).

♦️Avoid Night Eating: Fast during the circadian night to protect your blood sugar levels.

♦️ Improve Biomarkers: Implementing early time-restricted eating actively improves blood glucose and fat burning (substrate oxidation).

▶️Is eating one meal a day good for weight loss

Yes, eating one meal a day can be highly effective for short-term weight loss, but it is not scientifically superior to a standard, calorie-restricted diet.

The primary reason people lose weight on one meal a day is that it naturally forces a calorie deficit; it is simply difficult for most individuals to consume their entire days’ worth of energy in a single sitting.

▶️How one meal a day drives weight loss

♦️Automatic Calorie Control: Restricting eating to a one-hour window usually lowers overall daily calorie intake without conscious counting.

♦️Lower Insulin Levels: Prolonged fasting drops insulin levels, which enables the body to access and utilize stored body fat for fuel more easily.

♦️Long fasting windows trigger autophagy, the body’s internal cellular clean up and recycling process.

♦️It eliminates the time, stress, and planning required for preparing multiple meals throughout the day.

▶️How exactly do I manage with only one meal a day?

Now that I have laid out some facts about this way of eating, I will give you my own experience.

There are three things I noticed when I started eating one meal a day. I used to skip breakfast in the morning and my first meal will be at 02:00 pm then start again the following day.

My body went into a metabolic deficit for example fatigue, dizziness, and weight loss which plunged my body into a state of physical stress.

1️⃣The Dizziness (Dehydration & Electrolyte Loss):

Eating one meal a day led my body to rapidly deplete its glycogen reserves. Glycogen holds a massive amount of water. As it drops, the body flushes out water and vital electrolytes like sodium and potassium.

This fluid drop lowers blood pressure especially when standing up causing immediate light-headedness or dizziness.

2️⃣The fatigue of feeling exhausted is a direct result of cellular fuel deprivation. leaving my brain and muscles starved for consistent energy throughout the day.

3️⃣Weight loss was my goal, but a sudden combination of extreme fatigue and dizziness indicates that a portion of the weight you lost was likely water weight and precious lean muscle tissue rather than just fat.

▶️What did I do to help with such symptoms?

I started having light breakfast and one meal at 02:30 pm and skipped the evening meal  or night eating.

This type of diet has had no impact on my weight loss; however, I do not do it every day, sometimes I find myself having a light evening takeaway with family.
